Radical Family: Trailblazing Lesbian Moms Tell Their Stories - Margaret Mooney - Wisconsin Historical Society Press

''This essay collection documents the struggles and triumphs of ten lesbian families raising children in Madison, WI, in the 1980s, '90s, and early 2000s. This was a time when legal protections for gays and lesbians were in their infancy, and lesbian mothers frequently lost custody of their children. Lesbian parents faced complicated logistics, their families often were harassed and rejected, and their basic rights as parents were threatened. This book captures personal stories of women who fought to change this paradigm. With no rule book to guide them-and few laws to protect them-they created a path for others to follow. The authors recount their diverse paths to parenthood, as well as the hopes, risks, and legal and cultural barriers they experienced. Though each story is unique, they all have this in common: resilient and risk-taking acts, both small and sweeping, to defend their family's simple right to exist. Their stories deepen our understanding of what it means to be a mother-while showing how family, belonging, and acceptance are universal human needs''--
